10 Good Reasons to Spend a Day in Jail

Sharon Hoge visits the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia … and finds a few reasons to linger.

This is an invitation to spend a day in jail. Not a working jail, but an historic American prison, once the most expensive and famous lockup in the world. Castle-like 30-foot-high crenulated stone walls enclose the ten-and-a-half acre Eastern State Penitentiary, an architecturally significant structure that introduced a new form of incarcerating criminals. Closed down in the 1970s, the fortress was rescued from shopping mall developers and granted landmark status. Located within Philadelphia’s “museum district,” a few blocks away from the city’s famous art and science museums, the historic prison has been transformed into a museum offering sights and insights.
